Security Tips

Staying safe is hard for anyone in today's society. Burglaries and robberies can rise as the economy continues to decline. Staying safe is even harder for women. According to the 2010 Criminal Victimization report compiled by the Department of Justice, millions of women are attacked in the United States each year. Women can be attacked at any time while some of the most common are when they are walking to their car late at night or when they are alone on vacation. This is why women's safety is so important.
A little awareness can go a long way for women who are looking for ways to stay safe. There are many precautions set up by organizations to help them avoid unwanted situations. Many companies will have security personnel walk women out to their cars late at night so they do not have to walk by themselves. There are also classes and seminars that they can take on their own or through their job that can help educate them on the best way to stay safe. Many organizations like the Women's Safety and Resource Center exist to help women learn about staying safe. There are some simple steps that any woman can take to help keep them safe while they are out alone. Here are some women's safety tips that should be followed to both avoid an attack and quell an attack that is already occurring:
  • Be aware - Try to always know what your surroundings are. Be aware of potentially dangerous people while you are walking late at night. Prevention is the best cure when it comes to safety.
  • Do not walk alone – Avoid walking alone late at night if at all possible. Women who are alone are much bigger targets for potential attackers. Try to bring a friend with you wherever you go or have a coworker walk you to your car after work.
  • Eye contact – Make eye contact with someone that you think may be an attacker. This will increase the chance that you will be able to identify them later on and they know this. Being identified is an attacker's biggest fear due to the harsh penalties for their actions.
  • Keep your hands free – Do not talk on your cell phone while you are walking alone. This will make it much harder for you to defend yourself in the event that you are attacked. It will also make you a much more susceptible target for potential attackers.
  • Take the elevator – Empty stairwells are an easy place for burglars and rapists to go after women. Taking the elevator will reduce your chance of being attacked. Stand close to the doors so that if someone who makes you uneasy gets on the elevator you can exit quickly.
  • Take a self-defense class – learning some basic self-defense maneuvers can be vital to quelling an attack in the event that it might happen. Many intruders will stop attacking you once they understand that you can defend yourself because it makes the attack take longer and raises the likelihood that they will be noticed because of the commotion.
  • Carry mace or a stun gun – These two items are great tools. They can immediately incapacitate the attacker.
These are some very important safety tips for women. If you are a college student, you can take advantage of kiosks that are set up around campus to help you contact the proper authorities quickly in the case of an emergency. While at home, make sure your have an ADT home security system which makes it extremely easy to alert emergency services instantly. Following these tips will ensure that you have the ability to reduce the chances that you will be attacked in the first place. They will also give you the tools to stop an attack from being completed once it has started. These women's safety tips are essential knowledge for any woman who aims to protect herself.
